Summary of novel “Rose for Emily”

In 1891 Colonel Sartorish who is Miss Emily’s father fathered the edict that no Negro woman should appear in the streets without an apron. He had loaned money to the town . After her father died, she was invited having date as replacement the taxes. However, she refused it.

In the next generation, one of Colonel Sartorish became mayor and alderman with the new ideas. He sent her a letter but there was no replay. Then he wrote her by himself, offering to call and send his car for her. She replied the tax notice without comment. A deputation came to her house to have meeting. There they smell bad smell. They were allowed to the guest room. When they had a talk, she looked like two small pieces of coal press into a lamp of dough. She said that she had not had taxes in Jefferson. Moreover, they can accept it. Her father died two years ago and a short time later, her sweetheart who would marry her died too. After that,  she had difficult to be met. The neighbors were disturbed by the smell, so they complained the mayor about it. However, he convinced them that it just the carrion of rats or snake. The next day, they got another complaint. They wanted us to send her notice to clean up her house.

Providing the fact, the four men crossed her house like burglars. After a week or two the smell went away. The people were very sorry for her. When her father died, the house given to her, but they could pity her because she had to leave alone. As the custom people wanted to call at her house and offer condolence and aid. But Miss Emily looked usual with no trace of grief on her face. She told them that her father was not died. The doctor and minister tried to call her to dispose the body, she broke down, and they buried her father quickly. She was sick for along time. Then the company started to work, there was Homer Barron who will be in the center of the group. She looked happy then, liked have a spirit again. The people were glad to see it, because many people talked her like a poor woman.

Moreover she even tried to kill herself by consuming drug, but it failed. It was very good for her to end her live as knowing that Barron liked men. Next Sunday they saw they drove in the street. In addition, the news that Miss Emily brought jewelry made the people happy that they would marry. Barron came back to the town. A Negro man was shown in her house, and it was the last time Barron appeared. Miss Emily would be seen for a moment, for almost six months she did not appear in the street. When she went out, she became fat, her hair was gray. Then she died seventy-four years old because she felt ill in the house filled with dust and shadows with only Negro man. She died in one of the downstairs rooms. On the second day the two female cousins held the funeral.
